The TT Club has been monitoring the large number of international developments relating to security and providing advice both to specific Members and generally through its electronic newsletter, TT Talk. It has become apparent that, while ship-side assistance and awareness are being developed, little focus has been given to the land-side issues, both for ports and terminals and also for transport operators.

The Club has sought to address this need in a number of ways. In conjunction with Cargo Systems, a seminar was run in November 2002 entitled 'Security Matters', concentrating on port and terminal risks. Papers are available from Cargo Systems or, for Club Members, via Online Services.

The recent rush to develop and implement various security regulations by both international organizations, such as the IMO, ILO and WCO, as well as individual national trading partners, presents a substantial challenge to the international transport and logistics industry to keep abreast of all emerging requirements. In order to build adequate tools, the Club engaged Anglo/US security consultants, Hudson Trident, to provide, in a single location, a comprehensive database of international security related regulations. Initially this was available exclusively to Members, but in view of the widespread importance of this information it is now freely available for the industry.

Security Start provides a single point of high quality information relating to emerging security-related regulations. It forms part of the TT Club's continuing efforts to provide valuable information to the industry in relation to its obligations in relation to security. Together with this central database the Club has developed a web-based security gap-analysis tool, which continues to be available exclusively to assist Members in identifying areas of non-compliance within their own operations.
